Ladysmith Named Snowmobile Friendly Community

The Ladysmith Driftbusters Snowmobile Club was recently awarded the "Snowmobile Friendly Community" award. Driftbusters' President Dennis Arendt and Driftbusters' Secretary Jackie Kubisiak accepted the award.

The Snowmobile Friendly Community (SFC) Program was established by the AWSC to recognize and celebrate the volunteers that are the soul and backbone of organized snowmobiling and our statewide snowmobile trail system. The SFC Award is also an advocacy tool to further the mission of the AWSC: to promote safe and responsible snowmobiling. Snowmobile Friendly Communities build and maintain partnership between many stakeholders. As a tool, the SFC award helps Clubs and Counties preserve and protect snowmobiling by working together with their community partners to maintain and improve the economic impact snowmobiling provides. Snowmobile Friendly Communities and their local snowmobile Clubs promote safe and responsible snowmobiling and the tourism it can generate for their community. A Snowmobile Friendly Community Award announces that your area welcomes snowmobilers.

With Bravo's Top Chef premiere approaching on Wednesday, March 20, we can't wait for Wisconsin's culinary scene to be in the spotlight and are gearing up our culinary efforts for travelers hungry for more.

We need your help gathering culinary-focused deals in Rusk County. We encourage businesses to submit deals by March 1, to allow for enough time to get the deals updated on TravelWisconsin.com in time for the Top Chef premiere, though additional deals can be added at any time.

To submit a culinary-focused deal:

Snow and Trail Conditions

For you sledders that have escaped the nut house, Rusk County trails are going remain open through the weekend. Trails will close Monday April 3 as we hold out for one more snowfall.

Best riding will be in the Blue Hills north of Bruce and Weyerhaeuser and Hawkins trails. Trail 12A between Bruce and Weyerhaeuser is closed. Check with surrounding counties before crossing County lines.

Expect to encounter all the usual hazards of April snowmobiling. Until we get more snow trails are either a block of ice, wet snow or dirt.

Ladysmith Trails:

- Cemetery Rd reroute - 1/4 mile section of tight and hilly terrain is bad.

- Alleys/streets and bridges in City are completely bare.

- Small creek on 99 north of Flambeau Lodge is open but only about 4" deep with gravel bottom.

- Little Thornapple north of Cedar Lodge is probably open.

- Along 27 just before Thornapple Bridge the Pines have melted the snow on the hills.

- Gravel roads and driveway crossings are soggy.

- Trail 116 along the Hwy 8 is bare.

Cross Country Ski Trails

Lots of snow on the trails and in the woods, there's good crust skiing after an overnight freeze. If you start early and then catch the magic window as the snow starts to soften, you may have great spring skiing for a couple hours. Enjoy the trails we've been grooming all winter, or be adventurous and explore the trails that have had zero traffic due to December's ice storm. Ski the unopened (tree damaged) trails to appreciate the challenges we face this summer.

Snowshoers:ย the Ridges Snowshoe Trail is cleared of tree damage, we prefer you use that as your first option. If snowshoeing on the groomed ski trail,ย PLEASE SNOWSHOE WELL TO THE SIDE.

Snow and Trail Conditions Update

As of 3/24/2023:

3/27/2023 from Flambeau Area Trail Tenders - The Flambeau River opened up all the way around the bend, down river from Flater's. Please stay off. I don't expect the ice conditions to last very long on the lake either. Still quite a bit of ice, but it is going to start deteriorating fast. Time to put the sleds away for the year, and start planning for next year.

Thank you to all our landowners for graciously allowing us to cross your land. Without you, our sport that we enjoy, would not be possible.

As a group, we all apologize to our landowners for the few inconsiderate people out there who cannot stay on the trail. They make all of us look bad, when in reality it is just a few bad apples.

I am sure that those who ride like Dick, have no clue what it takes to keep our trail system going.

So if you are out riding, and you see Dick, make sure you explain to him, or her, what the ramifications of their actions could be. If they won't listen, then please report them. We, as a group, work way too hard, to have one inconsiderate individual ruin it for all of us.

Cross Country Ski Trails

Crust Skiing on Audie Lake
Lovely conditions skate skiing the crust on Audie Lake Sunday morning. From what I could tell, no humans have visited Audie Lake this winter. And that means you have an untouched wilderness adventure to enjoy. On Sunday, the best crust skiing was available from early morning until about 10:30-11:00 a.m.

Please note the following;

  • To reach Audie Lake, drive north on the Fire Lane Road (past the turnoff to the Blue Hills Ski Trail) and after about a mile, turn left (west) onto Perch Lake Road.
  • Be forewarned - Perch Lake Road is then a more challenging road to navigate. It's narrower, more snow rutted, and probably best to use a vehicle with higher clearance.
  • When you reach the usual entrance to the Audie Lake Campground and boat landing, you'll be surprised to find theย access road unplowed.
  • Keep driving the Perch Lake Road for another 0.3 mile where there's a good spot to turnaround and park -- with a short walk down to Audie Lake.
  • Put on your skis and go explore!

Audie Lake

  • Ski the perimeter -- it's about 6 km
  • In the southern most bay, you can ski up a small hill onto a small lake. From there, continue south across that unnamed lake and you can ski ontoย the West Side of the Blue Hills Trailย andย look for Letter F to orient yourself.

Sending a fond farewell to a season filled with it's share of ups and downs, and a heartfelt thank you to all of the staff that rode along with us every step of the way. To the customers who make it worth the while, I will miss the life and joy you bring to this hill and will be counting the days until we have the chance to ride with you again.

Snow and Trail Conditions Update

3/23/2023 - Current snow depth as shown on NOAA.

Road crossings are soft and muddy but trail conditions continue to remain good with occasional exposed dirt and slush spots. Highs around 40 the rest of the week and through the weekend but still low 20s every night. The thaw/freeze cycle is creating some icy conditions. Studs and ice scratchers are recommended.

Closed trails: 12A between Bruce and Weyerhaeuser due to open creek.

Caution Spots: The alley in Ladysmith on Trail 116 from Ladysmith Federal to Courthouse is mostly bare. Weyerhaeuser Trail 12 between 133 to 31 has water on the trail. If you know of more caution spots please share.

Cross Country Ski Trails

Lotsa Smiles SaturdayWhile groomers worked Friday evening, stiff north winds blew in an estimated 1" of flakes that created a velvety surface for Saturday's skiers. When skiers arrived Saturday, the classic track was partially (sometimes totally) drifted in. But the first strider in the track defined the track for subsequent skiers. Good classic skiing, very good skating. Beautiful, sunny (cold) late winter day.Plenty of happy faces yesterday. The 'smiley face' photos were taken at a few of the distance markers along the East Side Core Loop. If you haven't noticed, the Core Loop measures 11 kilometers - and has km markers at each km along the way. If youย look carefully at our East Side map, you'll find tick marks that identify each of the km distances.Grooming PlansNo grooming planned for Saturday evening or Sunday morning. The underlying base is smooth. Snow and Trail Conditions Update

As of 3/17/2023:

(3/16/23): It has been 40F and light rain all day. Hopefully that cold front shows up within the next few hours so things can start refreezing and we can get a couple inches of fresh snow for the weekend. 14F tonight with single digit lows with highs in the 20s through the weekend so things are going to get icy along with the usual spring hazards.

Reporting on trail conditions is very difficult this time of the year. Not going to recommend everyone get out and ride but not going to tell anyone not to ride either. You'll have to make your own decision.

Just a guess but weekend trail conditions might look something like:

40% great

25% good

25% fair

10% awful (roads, alleys, logging areas, etc.)

On a final note, Rusk County does not have a set closing date. That said, next week's forecast doesn't look great and from here out we're essentially day-to-day.

Cross Country Ski Trails

Walk On By...As part of a quick visit to the trailhead Thursday morning, I stopped in the warming house to make sure it was warm & cozy. With the deep snow, the path to the warming house is a one way street. On my way back to the parking lot, I glanced down and was surprised to find the tracks you see in the photos with this email.ย Based on the warm temps Wednesday night - and Thursday's rain - I'd guess those tracks were made during the night or early morning hours by a lone wolf. Do you agree?The tracks led out to the parking lot and right past the donation pole where we have maps for visitors. Unfortunately, this visitor didn't deposit anything in the donation pole. Looks likeย another Walk On By. Maybe it'llย take out a membership?Grooming Plans!With warm temps and rain, the trails were saturated soft Thursday. As temps fall, Friday evening - or Saturday morning - we hope to groom the skate deck for weekend skiing one more time.

Good News = Great Snowshoeing!Grab your snowshoes and come tromp our trails. The 'Ridges Snowshoe Trail' begins just east of the warming house, and will provide a fun challenge. See if you can find all our human rope tows.ย Click Here for a blog postย that describes the expansion of the trail earlier this winter.Difficult Grooming -- Very Challenging Snow StructureOver the course of 36 hours, the Hills received 8+ inches of new snow Saturday/Sunday. Sometimes dry snow, sometimes damp, sometimes fluffy, sometimes crispy? When our groomers tried to roll (compress and pack) the new deep snow Monday morning, they were frustrated by the flour-like nature of the snow that was difficult to compress. To top that off, the strong March sun peaked out and -- despite temps in the low 20s -- everything started to cake up on the grooming implements. 5 hours of less than satisfactory grooming results. Groomers headed home at 1 p.m. Monday -- then returned Monday evening for a second attempt. As of 11 p.m. Monday, I received a text message that grooming was "so far so good". Love it or Lose it? This is the never ending debate when it comes to Christie's t-bar.

As far as I am concerned our t-bar plays a huge role in giving people that unique experience that makes our customers fall in love with Christie. It not only serves up a bit of nostalgia, which I think we could all use right now, but it makes for a quick ride to the top of some of our most loved and most challenging trails. Can it be a little intimidating the first time or two? Most definitely. Can you sit back and relax on the way up? Probably not but you will be hard pressed to find a better view than the one this lift has to offer, and chances are you won't have to wait in line to experience it.

After many years of pleading my case I am overjoyed to tell you that we are finally ready to make the commitment to embrace this fabulous little lift and give it the love it so desperately needs. We've got some great plans in store so stay tuned later this week to see how you can help revive the t-bar! I cannot wait to see this idea come to fruition - it is going to be absolutely amazing!

What a Winter!
I've lived in Ladysmith since 1986, and I think this winter is some type of record breaker. And it's not done - 8 days til the first day of spring!

7" new snow at 4 p.m. today (Sunday, March 12) and snowing lightly. Consider the following...

  • Devastating ice storm in mid December
  • Abundant moisture-rich snowfalls. Instead of dry snowfalls andย a cold January, late December and early January wereย warm and damp, and January never consistently cooled down.
  • Several rain events that have added to the base rather than melting the snow.
  • Near record snow totals this year - 83 inches and counting as of 4 p.m. today:ย CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE SNOW SUMMARY SINCE 1999ย - this summary is always available by visiting the 'Trail Conditions' link at the top center ofย the website pages.
  • Over the course of the previous 23 winters, we've averaged 61.8 inches of snow each winter, with the current record of 89 inches during the winter of 2013-14 (the driest winters wereย 38 inches in both 2015-16 and 2009-10).
  • I haven't tried to determine the actual moisture content of each winter'sย snowfall, but based on the depth of snow in my front yard, I think this winter may set the record. Aย lot of my hedges and ornamentals have gone missing.

Grooming Plans
We're planning to pack today's abundant new snow -- the timing depends on moisture content and temperatures. Our goal is to compress and level today's new snow so it can absorb the predicted Thursday rain -- then groom for some more good skiing next weekend. And then we're hoping for more typical temps (maple syrup kind of temps with March freeze/thaw cycles) to transition the snow and create crust skiing where you can ski ANYWHERE!-Be sure to visit theirย websiteย orย Facebook pageย for more trail conditions.

(3/10/23): We groomed Sisters Farm and the lighted loop at the high school today. Sisters Farm groomed up well but will be soft yet today with the warm temps. So maybe give the trails a break today at least for snowshoeing and fat tire biking. Colder tonight so the trails should be great for all users tomorrow morning. Get on the trails early while temps are below freezing and give the trail a break when the temps go higher to help the trails last as long as we can.

Daytime temps generally in the 30s lately and going forward. Those spring hazards are coming out...icy corners, gravel, blacktop, rough logging spots, dirt, sticks, etc. Overall though trails are holding up pretty decent for March riding! Forecast looks manageable on the 10-day. Plenty of good riding this weekend ahead and hopefully can stay out next weekend too. It's been a great year so far in Rusk Co. Let's keep it that way. Groomers weren't able to groom sticky snow Monday evening, and just didn't have enough time Tuesday morning to freshen more of the classic track - rising temps and sunshine chased the groomers away before they could freshen more track on the East Side. Before the next snowfall, classic skiers can enjoy the March spring skiing by getting out there and busting track.More snowfalls and cool temps in the forecast,ย we plan on grooming the next snowfall to set up good skiing for Saturday.

Sisters Farm trail update- We groomed the West side trails today and with the 3 inches of new snow we were able to set a good track for skiing and have a great base for Fat tire biking and snowshoeing. The East side will be groomed tomorrow and should make for great skiing this weekend. Just a quick reminder to try and use the trails while the temps are below freezing, with the warmer temps in the forecast we can maintain our base longer if it doesn't get rutted during the time temps are warm. Not much to report. Groomers have been out steady since Tuesday. Monday's rain didn't hurt too bad and we got some fresh snow Wednesday. I believe everything has been groomed at least once since Saturday.

Expect a lot of traffic. It's a beautiful time of the year to ride.

Cross Country Ski Trails

Trail ConditionsExcellent conditions to begin Sunday morning. Thursday evening's grooming held up well throughout the weekend. And as is often the case, even though the parking lots may appear busy, the skiers seem to disappear and there's plenty of room to enjoy some fantastic skiing, bird song, and solitude.Grooming PlansWe'll see how much snow we received Sunday night & Monday morning, and watch the temps, then decide when to groom the new snow. There's a significant snowfall in the forecast for later this week -- we'll probably limit grooming of the Monday snowfall to packing of the new snow -- and plan on setting new classic track in time for weekend skiing.ย BTW - Saturday I measured 18 inches of compacted base on the East Side bridge at intersection #25. Don't pump up your bike tires yet, we should have decent skiing for another few weeks.

Snow and Trail Conditions Update

With the recent winter storm we are still planning on having our race event at the Narrows Resort scheduled for March 4th. We will start track preparation on Sunday and throughout the week.

Racers info:

-Parking is limited, get there early. If parking in the main lot please use the northwest driveway as the other driveway is quite steep. If you have a large trailer or parking concerns please call.

-Pre Registration : Just text us your name and what class you plan to run. This will give us an early idea of entries. You will still have to pay entry fee at the event.

-Registration: 8am - 9:30am

-Drivers Meeting: 10:15am

Race rules:

-$20 entry fee per sled.

-Challenge races $10 fee per race.

-All track officials have the final say and rules are subject to change.

-500 foot track, with starting light and 2 visual finish line judges.

-No timing lights, or photo finish. If a race is too close to call, we will run it again. minimum of 4 entries per class.

-If not enough entries for a class, classes will be combined with an alternate starting line for under class.

-Studs are allowed in all classes.

-Stock means stock and improved means any and all modifications.

-All sleds must have a working tether and it must be attached to the racer

-Racers must sign a waiver of liability.

-Racers must wear a helmet.

-Prizes will be awarded after all race have been concluded.

Classes:

-Stock and improved (modified)

-500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000s turbos, vintage.

-Turbos, vintage, and 1000s may be split into additional classes based on entries.

-Challenge races.

-Challenge your buddy to a race. You call your stakes.

-Challenge races will be ran throughout the day between classes.

Trail Conditions
(3/1/23): The micro climate of the Blue Hills will often surprise you.

Tuesday's conditions were SURPRISINGLY GOOD following Monday's wet day that included freezing rain, then 1/2" rain, then 1/2" of wet snow. The underlying packed powder (that was in such good shape Sunday) did a nice job of absorbing Monday's moisture. Skiers enjoyed very good skating and striding Tuesday morning. With bright sunshine highlighting the ice-shimmering treetops, the trails started to get sticky late morning. Gorgeous late winter day.

Grooming Plans in March

  • Snow is in Wednesday's forecast. The snowfall is supposed to end late Wednesday evening. We'll probably groom that snowfall Thursday evening to set the stage for the weekend.
  • As long as the late winter weather is cooperative - and skiers are using the trails -ย we'll keep grooming. We'll focus on grooming to create good conditions for the weekend.
  • Mid-week grooming will occasionally be performed.
  • March typically has thaw/freeze conditions that can provide some wonderful skiing. But you need to time your skiing to catch the 'magic window' when the trails soften in response to rising temps and sunshine.
  • There's nice skiing on the Core Loop Shortcut Segment where we recently removed ice storm damage(15-20-21-22-24-25).ย A NOTE TO THE WISE: for 100 meters west of #20, consider removing your skis and walking 100 strides over a segment of trail that has a thin base (loggers have been using this area to turn around when hauling logs).

Cross Country Ski Trails

Packed powder skiing, firm skate deck and classic track, sunshine and comfortable temps -- Sunday was a beautiful day to Ski the Hills.

Recently Opened Trails (still recovering from December Ice Storm Damage)

  • In early February, a couple of work crews decided to tackle the tree damage on a part of the East Side Core Loop that hadn't been opened.
  • Over the course of two days, two 4-man crews removed the deeply buried frozen tree debris between intersections 25-24-22-21-20-15 so all of us could enjoy skiing more ofย the East Side Core Loop.
  • We started grooming those trail segments February 11th.
  • Rain interfered -- and we finally were able to do some 'finish' grooming on those trail segments this past week.
  • A NOTE TO THE WISE: for 100 meters west of #20, you should probably remove your skis and walk 100 strides over a segment of trail that has a very thin base (loggers have been using this area to turn around when hauling logs).

Cross Country Ski Trails

The multi-day snowfall that began on Monday totaled 10+ inches of snow in the Hills - the 7+ inches Wednesday night into Thursday morning is a very dry snow, it blows away like a mature dandelion.

Grooming Report

  • Wednesday evening (February 22): worked 4 hours packingย the 3.5 inches of snow that had accumulated since Monday.
  • Thursday morning-afternoon (February 23): worked 6-7 hours usingย rollers to knock the air out of the 7 inches of new DRY snow. Groomers described challenging conditions, sometimes dealing with 4-foot drifts in open areas, and snow that was limited in its ability to pack or compress - it tended to bunch up in front of the rollers - and required a lot of 'working' of the snow to get it to cooperate. The result was pretty soft trails, not able to set track yet.
  • The access road (Fire Lane Road) was not plowed as of Thursday evening. Until it's plowed, you'll need a high clearance vehicle to reach the trailhead.

Grooming Plans

  • After temps drop below zero Friday morning, more grooming is planned later in the day after temps rebound. Hopefully the snow will be more compressible, and allow creation of a firm skate deck and the ability to set classic track.

If planning on skiing that section of trails, note that there is a segment of trail just west of #20 that is bare ground where loggers have been turning around. Plan on removing your skis to walk through that 100 meter section. This includes the lighted trails at Ladysmith High School. There are a number of trees down and many branches still covering the trail. Jim has organized a work day this Saturday at 10:00 am to work on clearing the lighted loop. If we can get 8 or so volunteers we could get the trail cleared by noon. If you can lend a hand that would be great. Also there is a fun snowshoe hike of 1,3 or 5 miles on the Ice Age Trail on highway F south of Birchwood near Murphy Flowage Campground next Saturday, February 11. Snowshoes can borrowed from the Ladysmith Info Center at no cost.

Cross Country Ski Trails

(2/22/23): Trail Conditions1.5"-2" fresh snow Monday. When skiing Tuesday, this quiet creamy snow was sitting on a generous base that is compacted hard and mostly smooth. This provided very good skate skiing Tuesday, wonderful gliding through the soft fresh ungroomed snow. Monday's snowfall made for decent classic skiing Tuesday in the old (ill-defined) classic track -- good kick, nice striding especially where someone had already 'broken trail' in the classic track.Grooming PlansBased on the predicted arrival of the Wednesday/Thursday 'big snow event', we are planning to groom Wednesday evening, Thursday morning, and again Thursday evening. Watch the website for twice daily updates. The updates will include information regarding plowing of the access road (Fire Lane Road). With lots of new snow and wind, the access road may be nearly impassable for a day or two.

Cross Country Ski Trails

Trail Conditions
1.2" of warm rain Tuesday/Wednesday, then falling temps. We groomed the rock hard surface of the ski trails Friday afternoon.

  • The ski trails absorbed Tuesday'sย rain, then froze like concrete. Friday's aggressive repetitive grooming (grinding) of the skate lane created skiable conditions Saturday. To start the day, the skate lane had a layer of sugar snow that varied in quality & thickness -- and varied in the ability to 'get an edge". More typical of March freeze/thaw conditions, early morning skiers had to work harder to edge their skis on uphills and downhills - fast butย controllable. With sunshine and rising temps, the trail softened a bit for afternoon skiers.
  • The classic track had a skiff of new snow in it to start the day (Saturday). This provided a little kick in the morning - I'm guessing that afternoon temps in the mid 30s helped soften the old track. [ Note: because the trail surface is so very hard, trying to set a fresh classic track just is out of the question for us right now. New snow is in the forecast. ]

Grooming Plans Sunday Morning

  • Sunday morning we're planning on scratching up the skate lane on select trails: the East Side Core Loop from 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12-13-14 -- then the Roundabout trail 14-A5-A3-A2 -- and back to the warming house via the Core Loop 25-26-1. Also planning on grooming the Whitetail Trail (East Side 2-A1-26) and the skate lane on Excelsior Road on the West Side. Refer to maps (below) to get your bearings.
  • If you can't safely ski a downhill, it's OK to remove your skis and walk to the side.
  • Theย snowshoe trailsย are crusty and ready for you.

Cross Country Ski Trails

Blue Hills Trails report: 1.2" of warm rain Tuesday/Wednesday, then falling temps. Iย visited the trailhead Thursday and found the following:

  • Lots of snow in our neck of the woods.
  • The access road to the trailhead (the Fire Lane Road) is glare ice. It has been lightly sanded down the middle.
  • There's a couple hundred feet of glare ice from the Fire Lane road to the parking lot on Excelsior Road (West Side). My AWD vehicle was able to slowly negotiate the icy stretch safely.
  • The parking lot by the East Side warming house has quite a bitย of glare ice -- but it's manageable.
  • The ski trails absorbed the rain, then froze like concrete. This hard surface will be fast and offer very little edge control if not groomed -- or softened by mild temps and sunshine.

Until we finalize our grooming options for the weekend, consider the following:

  • The snowshoe trails are certainly available. Plan on using snowshoes that provide grip for the ups & downs.
  • With cold temps in Friday's forecast, I'd suggest NOT skiing on Friday, it won't be enjoyable or safe until we can groom, or mild temps soften the surface.
  • We are considering limited grooming either Friday evening or Saturday morning - watch for updates on our website.
  • Temps on Saturday and Sunday will probably reach the mid 30s. If you'd like to try skiing the rock hard surface, wait until rising temps soften the surface.
  • If you can't safely ski a downhill, it's OK to remove your skis and walk to the side.

It's been almost 4 weeks since our last good snowfall. There's snow in the forecast next week, that should help make the trails enjoyable again.

Great skate skiing again yesterday (Monday) - like the best of March spring skiing. Thanks to Sunday evening's grooming, there was a fast sugar snow surface in the skate lane, adequate edge control, thrilling fast skating. Friday's freshly renovated classic track was pretty clean, and provided good striding - especially as sunshine and rising temps softened the glaze. The newly opened East Side Core Loop Bypass (intersections 15-20-21-22-24-25) is a bit rough, especially the 'Washout Trail' between intersections 15-20. Use caution descending between 15-20.If planning on skiing that section of trails, note that there is a segment of trail just west of #20 that is bare ground where loggers have been turning around. Snow and Trail Conditions Update

(2/8/23): Trails are holding up just fine. No worries here. Warm weather adds some challenge to keeping trails flat but cold weather at night will maintain our trail base. Mid-February sun doesn't hurt as much as mid-March sun so get your sleds out, no more than 7 weekends (best case scenario) left to ride. Typically we are toast by March 15!

Groomers around the County have been working around the warm weather and will continue to do so. Nearly every trail in the County has been groomed since the weekend and it's only Wednesday. As we go through this warm stretch remember that warm weather brings out a lot of fair-weather riders. Trails will be busy and the packy snow will chop up the trails quicker than a 20 degree day.

I know it's bad timing for trail updates but I will have very limited access/time to keep up with Ride Rusk over the next week. I will again be participating in Snowball Cancer, a tremendous event sponsored by tremendous people in the Keller Family Community Foundation. If anyone has interest in participating in the future, I'd love to talk you through it! I'll be riding the v500 tomorrow and v700 on Valentine's Day and joy riding and spending time with family in between.

If you should feel inclined to generously donate to the cause you can donate to anyone on the roster. Everyone in the group is doing it for the same reason! CANCER SUCKS!

We groomed again Sunday evening. Groomers worked on the skate lane on most of the trails while they waited for temps to fall so they could groom the newly opened East Side 'Core Loop Bypass' 15-20-21-22-24-25. As midnight approached, they groomed the bypass trails, this included classic track. It should be skiable today.If planning on skiing that section of trails, note that there is a segment of trail just west of #20 that is bare ground where loggers have been turning around. Plan on removing your skis to walk through that 100 meter section. This includes the lighted trails at Ladysmith High School. There are a number of trees down and many branchs still covering the trail. Jim has organized a work day this Saturday at 10:00 am to work on clearing the lighted loop. If we can get 8 or so volunteers we could get the trail cleared by noon. If you can lend a hand that would be great. Also there is a fun snowshoe hike of 1,3 or 5 miles on the Ice Age Trail on highway F south of Birchwood near Murphy Flowage Campground next Saturday, February 11. Snowshoes can borrowed from the Ladysmith Info Center at no cost.

(2/6/23): Ladysmith Driftbusters Snowmobile Club Corridor 27 north of Cedar Lodge is now groomed and open. The final 9-mile stretch is likely still riddled with small sticks and some "sled slappers" but is passable nonetheless. Take your time on this trail and admire the remnants of the Dec 15 storm damage.

Driftbusters Trail 99 remains closed. Brushing crews are still working through that stretch!

This week's club event is Neighborly Sno-goers snowmobile club Chicken Dinner at Sheps Northshore Bar & Campground on trail 31/Hwy 40 in Island Lake (10 miles south of Bruce) on Saturday from 12pm-4pm.

Snow and Trail Conditions Update

(2/3/23): Well, it sure ain't perfect but Corridor 27 is now open! We have finally made it through to connect with Winter Huskies Snowmobile Club Trail 5S!

Just north of Cedar Lodge there is about a mile and half that is not groomed yet. We started packing it tonight by sled but need more sled traffic before we can groom it. If you aren't comfortable riding ungroomed trail, do not travel.

Beyond that stretch Dee and Greg groomed from Lea Lake Rd to Winter Rd/Old J. From there the trail normally runs in the ditch along Thornapple Grade but this year we will have to ride the shoulder.

This isn't a high speed trail right now. It's 9 miles through of the heart of the Dec 15 storm. It's incredible how many trees were destroyed. There is a good deal of sticks on the trail and "sled slappers" hanging onto the trail.

A lot of trail signs on this stretch have been buried or destroyed. We will work on resigning as we go. Ride with extra caution!

Saturday evening - groomed the skate deck on many of the East Side trails; and groomed Excelsior Road (West Side) including new classic track. Since the last snowfall, a couple of windy days have deposited a mild-moderate amount of trail litter in the form of pine needles, oak leaves, and small branches. The litter is most noticeable close to the trailhead, less bothersome after you ski a couple hundred meters from the warming house. When skiing, flick-a-stick every now and then and we'll all appreciate the community effort. News Flash!

With an exceptional snow depth mixed with ice, the infamous Blue Hills Bill set his alarm for an early awakening this morning. He knew he'd have to work hard to exit his burrow before sunrise. Following the rain, ice and BIG snows of December, Bill's burrow has been insulated and cozy. Bill munched a quick breakfast today, and started digging. Just in the nick of time, he crawled out of his burrow at 7:27 this morning and delivered his annual prognostication to downtown Bruce, WI. Despite the cold morning, there was a nice crowd on hand. Grooming ReportThe classic track on many of the East Side trails was in need of improvement. So last evening, groomers ripped out the old classic track and set fresh classic track on the opposite side of the trail on many of the East Side trails; at the same time they touched up the skate deck on those same trails, then touched up the skate deck on Excelsior Road on the West Side.

(January 26th)-ย Groomers have been out steady all week. Trails are very good to excellent. With the lack of snow in southern half of the state you can expect heavy traffic again this week. Hawkins Sno-hawks Brat feed is Saturday, 28th from 11-4 and is a sure bet to attract A LOT of sleds. The groomer shed will be open for seating, eating and raffles. There will also be campfires outside to keep you warm!

*Ladysmith Driftbusters Snowmobile Club Trail 27 north of Cedar Lodge and Trail 99 north of Flambeau River Lodge remain closed. The trails tee into Winter Huskies Trail 5S so there is no connection to Winter at this time do to storm damage. We are hopeful to be ready by next weekend. Connections to Sawyer County Snowmobile ATV Alliance are on far west and east sides of the county near Birchwood on west and Flambeau River State Forest on east.

(January 30th)- Packed powder conditions, very good skating and striding yesterday.

A very destructive mid-December ice stormย (visit our blog for photos etc) initially shut down our skiing. We've been able to open about half of our East Side trails, and Excelsior Road is open on the West Side.ย Click here for helpful maps that show our open trails. Snowshoers,ย we prefer you use the Ridges Snowshoe Trail as your first option. Christie Mountain

(January 30th)- The Hometown Hill Program is hands down my favorite part of this season! We wanted to support our local school in growing smart, strong and healthy kids who see first-hand the benefits of being active and being outdoors, especially in the winter months. And with that end in mind the Hometown Hill Program was born!

We collaborated with our local school district to offer free skiing to all students enrolled in the Bruce School grades 3 - 12. The goal of this program is to invest in our community's youth. In reality, we are investing in the future of Christie in so many ways PLUS I get to see my local peeps on a much bigger scale which always makes me happy.

The past two weeks we brought grades 3 - 5 out to Christie to learn to ski and it was amazing! The students who already knew how to ski rose to the challenge of helping their non-skiing classmates. We had parents and school staff right alongside Christie staff encouraging and demonstrating and cheering them on every step of the way. I thank everyone who played a part in getting these kids out to Christie because building confidence on the slopes is integral to the success of this program.

When you live in a ski town you should ski like you live in a ski town and I hope that every Bruce student takes that to heart!

Trail 27 is nearly ready. We are hopeful to be done with machine work today so we can clean it up and pack it ahead of the deep freeze. The clearing crew will move over to 99 after 27 is cleared. With a little luck and a lot of work we're hopeful to have them open and groomed ahead of our Chili & Pulled Pork Feed Saturday, Feb. 4 @ JS Supper Club & Catering.

Saturday Evening Grooming

  • The Saturday evening plan was to remove the high spots atย the side of the skate deck opposite the classic track (i.e., remove any tendency toward development of a sunken trough in the skate deck).
  • Some of the trails provided near perfect skiing Saturday -- our groomers will leave those trails as is.

They maybe a bit soft and we may have to run across them again today. The west side was rolled and will be tracked today for skiing, Fat biking should be pretty good but will be better by the weekend. Please snowshoe, Fat bike on Westside trails only and please no hiking without snowshoes on any groomed trails. Should be a great weekend to get out on the trails, Enjoy!

Snowmobile Trails

Rusk County Trails report:

(via Facebook 01/03/23) Snow is falling. Work continues for Rusk County. Trails conditions vary greatly. Early season riding...ride smart.
Groomers have been out and trails are starting to shape up. Crews continue to be out working on clearing trails from Dec. 15 storm. Ride with caution. If you can help brush trails please reach out so we can get trails cleared for groomers can get through! Please stop and throw some sticks off the trail. It's much easier for snowmobiles to hop off and throw sticks off than for groomers to stop the machine and climb down.

-Bluehills Trailblazers cleared Trail 27 South to FATT trails and is now open. Blue Hills are bad and need to be cut out.

-Weyerhaeuser Snowmobile club trails are shooting for the weekend. TBD.

-Neighborly sno-goers snowmobile club are looking for help to cut trails open.

-Flambeau Area Trail Tenders are open but not groomed.

-Sheldon and Ladysmith Driftbusters Snowmobile Club trails that are open have been groomed this week. Still some work to connect Glen Flora to Ingram. The north loop is going to take a while yet. It's a mess. Note: Flambeau Lodge is closed for a couple weeks yet.

-Hawkins Sno-hawks are still trying to freeze 116 to Ingram. A ton of work ahead of them on Trail 12 as they work through the County Forest.

Cross Country Ski Trails

Blue Hills Trails report:

(via Facebook) After the December 15th destructive ice storm shut down our trails, December 26-28 we rented heavy equipment (from Timber Supply & Rental) to remove extensive tree damage from our ski trails. That allowed us to start grooming about 45% of the East Side trails. Now we're gradually opening more trails using hand labor. During the 3-day New Years holiday, eleven individuals teamed up on a trail measuring 300 meters in length, and removed dozens & dozens of small saplings, then about 8 sizable trees. Many thanks to ALL the volunteers this past week that have helped clear tree damage.

Ladysmith Area Trail Association report:

(via Facebook 01/03/23) Most of the west side Trails at Sisters Farm have been opened up except for the single-track section of River trail and the unmarked trail in the Pines. However, Corn and River trail are only open wide enough to get the single track roller through at this time. Therefore River and corn trail will only be groomed for snowshoeing and Fat tire biking until they can be fully opened. The following Trails will be groomed (After current snow) with tracks set for skiing on one side of the trail and the other side set up for snowshoeing and Fat tire biking. North Trail A-B-C, Loop de Loop C-D, North Point Trail D-E-F, South point Trail F-G-H, May trail H-E, Cross trail R-T-P-O-T-R, Middle Trail R-S and Aftter Thought Trail S-A. Note, Trails on the West side are not wide enough for skate skiing. While we hope the trails will be useable after we get them groomed please be aware there are still many small branches and brush that maybe infringing on the trail. If you're out using the trail please be cautious and help us out by removing some of those you come across. Also, please! once the trail is groomed do not hike on trails without snowshoes, boots pot hole the grooming and make it hard for other users.

East side update. Now that we have the West side mostly open, we will focus efforts on the East side trails. The only Trails on the East side that are open at this time is the loop from the parking lot that includes Kennecott Short Cut and Kennecott Long Cut 8-7-6 and back to 7. We have cleared most of Scouts Route 6-5-4 but will not groom it until we get the loop including Flambeau View and Brockbank Cutoff cleared. The east side trails are reserved for skiing only please (both skate and classic). Please snowshoe and Fat Tire bike on the West side trails. We will continue to work on getting the trails open and cleaned up. We will likely be having another workday this Saturday, stay tuned for updates. We also have people out working on the trails most every day if you can please message us and we can fill you in on times and places.

Cross Country Ski Trails

Blue Hills Trails report:

(December 20th)- While waiting for heavy equipment to remove downed trees and plow the Fire Lane Road so we could reach our trailhead, I just couldn't wait any longer. We needed information regarding the condition of our warming house, storage buildings, and ski trails. So Monday morning, I skied 2.5 miles through the deep snow on the Fire Lane Road (16" of settled snow) to check things out.

  • The Fire Lane Road has an unbelievable amount of tree damage where I skied. Trees bent over and blocking 2/3 the width of the road, trees snapped off and laying across the road, and plenty of downed branches. The deep snow and snow laden trees reminds me of back country skiing in the mountains of British Columbia when I was in my 30s. Not something I'm used to in Rusk County.
  • When I arrived at the trailhead, I was greeted by the downed tree in the top photo. It's blocking the gate where our grooming equipment moves, and where our skiers step into their bindings.
  • Looking at the warming house, I realized five tall red pines had snapped off 20-30 feet off the ground. Somehow they landed next to the warming house without causing significant damage to the building (one tree is resting on the northwest corner of the roof). However, one tree crushed the lovely ski rack that Jim Sirek crafted a few years ago - but that same tree was kind enough to miss Jim's fire pit bench by 4 inches.
  • Inspection of our three storage buildings showed them to be undamaged by near misses. One shipping container has a tree blocking access to its doors; our storage shed has a heavy limb laying in front of it that missed the shed and solar panels by a few inches.
  • Fortunately most of our grooming implements were inside a shipping container and avoided storm damage.
  • One of the pit toilets has a medium size tree resting on its roof. We'll check that out in the near future.
  • Our two propane tanks are undamaged.
  • The short trail that connects the trailhead with the Gravel Road has lots of downed trees and will need quite a bit of chainsaw work before we can start exploring the Core Loop between intersections 1 & 2.

So.....
Plenty of bad news. But on the bright side, the trailhead buildings, propane tanks, and equipment sustained only limited damage.

Once the Fire Lane Road is plowed and the trailhead is accessible by vehicle, when the weather cooperates, we'll pick a day to clean up the downed trees at the trailhead that are in greatest need of removal.

To clear the amazing amount of tree damage we anticipate on the ski trails, we now are exploring options for hiring heavy equipment operators to deal with the big stuff and the trees that would be too dangerous for hand removal (picture trees falling or springing free unexpectedly).

(December 18th)- Well the trail system at Sisters Farm is a disaster and that maybe an understatement. We have been out doing some reconnaissance and we have a big job ahead of us to clear trails on hundreds of down trees and branches. So the project starts today. We are planning to meet at 1:00 in the Sisters Farm parking lot to start opening a loop at the trail. If you can come and help bring a saw and/or clippers. The more hands we have the more we can get done. Please be patient with the trails this winter as it appears this will be an all winter project. More work days will be planned if you can't make it out today.

(December 19th)- Well we had seven volunteers work on clearing trails at sisters farm. After a number of hours of work we got about a 1.5 kilometer loop on the east side from the parking lot open It has been groomed and should be good to ski. It is going to be a tall task to get trails open this winter but we will keep after it. Stay tuned for more updates and work days.

(December 18th)- WE ARE BACK! After 22" of fresh snow & a city wide power outage. We are ready to open with some incredible snow conditions. See you tomorrow 10am-6pm. Tubing is currently CLOSED.

(December 20th)- It has been a week for the books and I don't even know where to start with the thank you's. I cannot express the amount of work it took to pull off opening today and our outdoor crew deserves a huge round of applause. When I finally decided that walking to work on Wednesday was my only option I was beyond shocked to find employees already out wielding chainsaws and shovels, some of whom didn't even have power at their own homes!

Many of them had run into impassable roads on their way here only to turn around and try another route. It was then I was reminded of their full on dedication to this hill. As the day wore on the power will still not restored. I watched them trudge through the 19" of snow and realized we were in for the long haul. The snow removal alone was enough to deal with but the trees downed by the storm was a feat I still don't know how they overcame.

As if the 19" wasn't enough the snow just kept coming and the power did not return. This crew kept after it day after day knowing that when the power was restored there was a good chance that the ice would not allow us to open lifts. When we did get electricity back they were out de-icing rope tows, chairs and the chairlift cable.

It's a wonder we were able to open at all this weekend, and I can't think of a better way to show that crew how appreciated they are than the number of ecstatic skiers and boarders we saw today. Our customers were bursting at the seams with appreciation for the effort it took to get the chair turning. It was a good day and I am, once again, indebted to an outdoor crew that always gives it all they have.

Blue Hills Trails report:

We groomed Excelsior Road this morning (Monday)!
Ski the West Side Tuesday if you can.

Grooming Report:

  • The series of Wisconsin gun deer hunts ended Sunday evening (yesterday).
  • With permission from the Rusk County Forestry Department, this morning we activated our sharing agreement for use of Excelsior Road (theย major access point to the West Side trails).
  • Our groomers pulled our ABR trail renovator out of storage, and used it to rip out the ruts from truck traffic, and replace it with corduroy.
  • After several passes, the full 3 km length of Excelsior Road was in surprisingly good shape.
  • The mixing of multiple snowfalls (i.e., different types of snow crystals) started setting up and providingย nice creamy skating conditions (and probably decent striding) right away.
  • The new trail onย the West Sideย (Y to Z) awaits your pleasure. It dips and rolls and climbs, and offers the highest vantage point on the West Side -- about 200 meters south of Letter Z.
  • Try this 7 km loop: skiย from the new parking lot (east end of Excelsior Road) to Letter Y, then enjoy the new trail (Y to Z) before returning via Z-E-D-C-B-Aย to the parking area -- or try the reverse. It's mostly considered 'beginner' conditions, but because of the elevation changes it will challenge your fitness.
  • FYI: per the agreement established a few years ago, we share Excelsior Road with ATVs and snowmobiles that are allowed use of the south half of Excelsior Road. This has worked surprisingly well the past couple years. If you find someone that isn't respecting this arrangement, please gently educate them.

Ladysmith Area Trails report:

(December 1st)- We have snow! Sisters farm received about 5 inches of snow. The entire trail system has been rolled to get the base started. All trails are rough with some dirt and has spots to avoid however if you want to get the rock skis out it is ski-able but slow and rough. Fat tire bike bike riding on the west side should be fairly good but low tire pressure is recommended as it maybe soft. Not a lot of snow for snowshoeing yet and as always please do not hike without snowshoes on groomed trails. With the first snow now is the time to consider sending in your LATA membership. Funds help us keep the trails open. See you out on the trails!

South of 8 is already CLOSED (3/14/22), remaining club trails will CLOSE for the season tonight (3/15/22). All clubs have a lot of work to do yet this Spring, pick up signs, brushing and groomer maintenance. I absolutely positively do not want to let go of this season for the following reasons: It is not half as much fun to work here when the chalet isn't full of happy. I feel like I didn't have enough time to make all of the changes I wanted to make this season. I don't want to put my skis away for the season (yes me!!!!). The 2022/2023 Season is tentatively 250 long days away.

We live in Wisconsin which pretty much guarantees us at least one Spring snow dump after Mother Nature has abolished our snow base which means I will soon have to break the hearts of dozens of super optimistic snow enthusiasts with hopes of getting out there just one more time.

Most importantly, I am going to miss seeing you all every weekend. Whether you are a member of our amazing staff or one of our fabulous customers you are hard to let go of and I hope I get the chance to work with you and for you again. Thank you to everyone who was a part of this season in one way or another.

Snow and Trail Conditions Update

As of 3/10/22:

North half of county is holding up pretty good. South half showing more dirt but still good riding out there. Ladysmith north and east trails looking great. Hawkins groomed everything except from warming shack to Flambeau Lodge. Expect that to be done before the weekend. Bruce, Weyerhaeuser and Sheldon have not been out this week yet.

From Ladysmith Driftbusters (3/8/22):

Just did a 30-mile loop to check things out. City of Ladysmith has 5 blocks of alley riding that is bare. North-south is not as bad and east-west is passable but it will test your carbides. Trail 12 (high line) from Ladysmith to Flambeau Lodge is Very Good with few minor sun spots. Trail 99 from Flambeau Lodge to Tony is Excellent. Trail 116 from Tony to Ladysmith is Excellent. Trail 12/27 from Ladysmith to Trail 12 (high line) has a lot of dirt. It always sucks, we know, but it's only a mile. We'll try to come up with a solution to improve it next year. Somehow we escaped with hardly any rain damage. Trails are flat, fast and firm. I highly recommend studs and scratchers. For perspective I run a 600 Ski-doo with 1.25" track and 96 studs. My engine was running 120-128 degrees tonight. I normally run 102-106 degrees. I did not put scratchers down but 800/850 riders might want them. Groomers will be out all day and night tomorrow to touch things up and loosen up that top crust. We have 5 phenomenal final days of trail riding ahead of us before a full forecast of upper 40s!

(3/9/22): North loop done! Heading to Ingram! Scraped that ice glaze off but still recommend studs and scratchers. Trails are flat and firm. Please watch your speed! Very easy to get carried away!

Blue Hills Trails report:

There should be decent skating conditions on the East Side today (check the 'Grooming Report'). On trails not recently groomed for skate skiing, the base underlying a 1-inch topping of snow is icy but skiable - especially if you wait for rising temps and sunshine to help soften the base. For skate skiers, it's a bit of a challenge to get an edge on the ungroomed trails. The old classic track is in pretty good shape throughout the trail system and offers nice striding - although it's glazed where it's received traffic.

As of 3/8/22:

County trails are open with occasional closures. Trails remain OPEN. We have not yet had time to inspect all of them. Expect icy corners, dirt, slush and braches/debris. Trails vary but generally are 80% good with some fair and poor spots. At this time notable known bad sections are the ally through Ladysmith, I-Bridge (road is bare and lake is slushy), and the 1 mile stretch from Hwy 27 to the Highline. 2 - one mile stretches of logging on Trail 12 between Flambeau Lodge and Hawkins Warming Shack. Along Hwy 8 on the west side of Bruce is pretty bare too. Any others? Please put it in the comments! Use common sense. Ride defensively. Expect heavy traffic this weekend as many try to squeeze last ride in. Next week's forecast has a lot of 40s in it. More updates to follow throughout the week.

Ice, rain and snow over the weekend. Very icy conditions early Monday morning. Skiers Monday afternoon reported fairly decent conditions as temps in the low 30s and sunshine helped Sunday's 1-inch snowfall begin bonding to the underlying icy base. If in doubt, hold off on skiing until we are able to groom (probably grooming Wednesday evening). County trails are open with occasional closures. All Rusk Co trails got absolutely hammered yesterday. Thank you all who made Rusk Co your riding destination! It was awesome to see so many sleds in our area. There are a few groomers out this morning trying to pick up the pieces.

Why were some trails rough this weekend? Obviously a ton of traffic but also it was 45 degrees last Sunday so we couldn't clean up Saturday's moguls before we got 8" of snow. So most trails only got 1 pass over it did not have time cut moguls or to set up as good as we wished. Trails should hold up better after next couple passes as we work new snow in and they have some time to setup!

Wednesday's bright sunshine highlighted the new snow and made for great snowshoeing. Nice way to keep the muscles moving while waiting for the ski trails to firm up.Grooming Report / PlansGroomers focused on the East Side trails Tuesday and Wednesday. Quality rather than quantity. The many trails that were rolled Tuesday during the snowstorm received finish grooming Wednesday afternoon. The snow was working well (a reflection of temps, humidity, and cooperative snow crystals). The little bit of classic track I saw yesterday was deep and crisp. If the skate lane is still a bit soft today, it'll soon receive more grooming. Next step is to start grooming the new snow on the West Side trails. Good luck to all our Birkie skiers!

County trails are open with occasional closures. Stop in for the Bruce Blue Hills Trailblazers Annual Fundraiser for food and raffles at the Bruce Fire Hall from 12-4pm.

Be very careful if riding on Dairyland Flowage. WRA plowed more roads and with the drifting the last few days they are extremely difficult to see.

Blue Hills Trails report:

Packed powder skiing, good skating and striding. On the East Side, the Core Loop is quite firm, the side trails are a little soft. On the West Side, Excelsior Road and the East/West crossover trail are mostly firm. The rest of the West Side is a bit soft and would benefit from another grooming pass.

Most of the East Side trails include classic track. On the West Side, classic track is present on Excelsior Road, and the East/West crossover trail (A-B-J-K-L-23). One of our grooming machines (our workhorse snowmobile) is in the shop for repairs, and until it returns, our Honda UTV will focus our grooming on the most frequently traveled trails.

Snow and Trail Conditions Update

As of 2/10/22:

County trails are open with occasional closures. Come on up! We are wide open! 90% of trails have been groomed at least once this week. Groomers will be out tomorrow working new snow in too! Bruce, Hawkins, Ladysmith and Weyerhaeuser were running groomer hard yesterday. Nearly every trail has been groomed since the weekend except Sheldon and the Island Lake area -- pretty thin on the south half of the county. It looks like we may have dodged the warm weather bullet. Highest temp I saw in Ladysmith today was 33 and its starting to cool back down. Forecasts appear to have removed any breaks above freezing and even added some accumulating snow to the forecast later in the week. We have had tremendous turn outs to Rusk Co club fundraisers this year. Let's keep it rolling and pack Shep's Northshore Bar & Campground this Saturday 2/12 for the Neighborly Sno-Goers Snowmobile Club Chicken Dinner!

Blue Hills Trails report:

Today's skiers enjoyed 0.5"-1" powder topping the trails.

On the East Side trails, skating conditions today were very good to excellent. The classic track was set 10 days ago and was in good shape other than a few sections where it was heavily drifted.

On the West Side trails, conditions on the north half are good. Excelsior Road (West Side) is in good condition - even though the snow cover on the east half mile of Excelsior Road has been thin, you can use your good skis the full length of Excelsior Road.

98% of the East Side trails are open and groomed for skating; we try to place classic track on more than 3/4 of the East Side trails. On the West Side, all theย available trailsย are groomed for skating andย classic skiing.

Snow and Trail Conditions Update

As of 2/8/22:

County trails are open with occasional closures. Bruce, Hawkins, Ladysmith and Weyerhaeuser were running groomer hard yesterday. Nearly every trail has been groomed since the weekend except Sheldon and the Island Lake area -- pretty thin on the south half of the county. It looks like we may have dodged the warm weather bullet. Highest temp I saw in Ladysmith today was 33 and its starting to cool back down. Forecasts appear to have removed any breaks above freezing and even added some accumulating snow to the forecast later in the week. We have had tremendous turn outs to Rusk Co club fundraisers this year. Let's keep it rolling and pack Shep's Northshore Bar & Campground this Saturday 2/12 for the Neighborly Sno-Goers Snowmobile Club Chicken Dinner!

From Ladysmith Driftbusters (Ladysmith): WRA is plowing roads on Dairyland Flowage. They are extremely difficult to see on sled. Ride with extra caution. Groomers will be out all day today trying to clean up after the weekend. Some forecasts project us being closer to 40 on Tuesday. If that's the case the groomer will be parked until it cools down. Our trails are not closing but please try not to ride them if we're above freezing. If you must ride them please please please ride gently. We need to preserve what we have because apparently, it's not going to snow anymore this year!

From Flambeau Area Trail Tenders Snowmobile Club (Flambeau): Just a friendly reminder. ALL Chippewa County trails closed at 8 am this morning. THIS INCLUDES OUR STUB TRAILS OFF OF LAKE HOLCOMBE, TO LOONY BIN, BIG MINNOW AND CENEX AND COOKIES, AND TO BLACK BEAR! If we do not lose too much snow tomorrow, we will reopen the stub trails on Friday morning. Please check back for updates. Until then, please stay off the trails in Chippewa county. Thank You

Cross Country Ski Trails

Blue Hills Trails report:

While skiing Sunday, I decided to look for unusual photos along the side of the trail. From top to bottom:

  • Interesting snowcap
  • Pileated woodpecker townhouse - with one room already rented
  • Getting hung-up
  • Porcupines like to use our blue trail markers for teething

Grooming Report
Last evening we used our trail leveler (a specialized grooming implement) to smooth the skate deck on part of the East Side. Its aggressive teeth and frame were used to attack the center crown, undulations, and uneven spots on part of the Core Loop from 1-2-3-4-5-6, and the Otter Slide / Far East trails. Then out cameย our big G2ย (a finishing implement) to make things pretty again.

Sisters farm trail update the west side trails where groomed today and tracks set. Bike loops also touched up. Bike trails are hard and fast. Thin base but trails are in good shape. Jim will likely touch up the East side for skate skiing.

Local trails should be nice and flat for Ladysmith Driftbusters Snowmobile Club Chili and Pulled Pork Feed on Saturday. All clubs have had groomers out. Trails are still thin so be careful for those early season hazards! WHY WON'T IT SNOW????

Hawkins Sno-Hawks (Hawkins): Groomer was out all day yesterday (2/3) and will be today to finish all our trails for this weekends brat feed for the Ladysmith drift busters

Cross Country Ski Trails

Blue Hills Trails report:

On the East Side trails, skating conditions are good. The classic track was set a week ago and has held up well. Trails that are heavily wooded (especially pines &ย hemlocks) have some litter from Tuesday's breezes.

The West Side trails were groomed Thursday evening, conditions on the north half are very good. Excelsior Road (West Side) is in good condition - the snow cover on the east half mile of Excelsior Road is thin, but you can use your good skis the full length of Excelsior Road.

99% of the East Side trails are open and groomed for skating; more than 3/4 of the East Side trails are groomed for classic skiing. On the West Side, all the available trails are groomed for skating andย classic skiing.

Hawkins Brat Feed was a success! It's so great to see how genuinely happy everyone is at these events. What's the saying? You don't know you're in the good ol days until they're gone. Well soak it up folks. We have an event in Rusk Co every weekend in February for you to ride out and share that snowmobiling happiness. Next up, Ladysmith Driftbusters Snowmobile Club Chili and Pulled Pork at Tee Away Golf & Grill 2/5/2022!

From Ladysmith Driftbusters (Ladysmith): Steve was out late last night. Ladysmith to Conrath, JS Supper Club & Catering, The Pickled Gill, Cedar Lodge, Flambeau River Lodge, Adventures Resort-Bar, Grill, and Campground and to Ingram was ALL GROOMED YESTERDAY. Everything except the north end which was groomed Wednesday and does not usually see as much traffic. Enjoy and ride safe!

Cross Country Ski Trails

Blue Hills Trails report:

A stiff wind deposited a mild amount of trail litter the past 24 hours - most noticeable when skiing through sections of trails bordered by pines or hemlocks - but all things considered, quite tolerable. The trail litter adds to the challenge: flick-a-stick as you ski, it'll challenge your eye-hand coordination. On the East Side trails, skating conditions are very good. The classic track is fairly deep, firm, and fast.

On the West Side, conditions on the north half are good. Excelsior Road (West Side) is in good to very good condition - the snow cover on the east half mile of Excelsior Road is thin, but you can use your good skis the full length of Excelsior Road.

99% of the East Side trails are open and groomed for skating; more than 3/4 of the East Side trails are groomed for classic skiing. On the West Side, the north half of the West Side is groomed for skating &ย classic skiing - and Excelsior Road is groomed for skating and and classic skiing.

READ THE IMPORTANT UPDATES REGARDING THE STATUS OF THE WEST SIDE TRAILS. West Side logging was completed January 18th.

County trails are open with occasional closures. Sno-Hawks Brat Feed this Saturday kicks off a string of 5 weekends in a row of fundraisers. Our trails are shaping up nicely. Still some early season hazards to watch for but we're on the cusp of midseason conditions! Trails vary fair-good-great. Ride safe.

Blue Hills Trails report:ย 

Conditions on the East Side trails are very good. The skate deck is in great shape. Fresh classic track was set on the Core Loop Tuesday midday. More classic track will be added to the East Side on Thursday evening after winds die down.

Grooming Report

Logging operations on the West Side were completed one week ago. With the powder snowfalls from this past weekend as working material, groomers worked last evening (Wednesday), opening more West Side trails. The following comments relate to the above map.

  • Trails highlighted in GREEN are in good shape. This includes classic track that has a couple inches of powder snow. The East/West crossover trail connects to the GREEN trails.
  • Trails highlighted in PINK were groomed for the first time yesterday. They have a thin snow cover and some dirt spots. Use your rock skis on the PINK trails.
  • Trails highlighted in YELLOW have a thin snow cover, hidden tire ridges (rocks and dirt) from recent logging, and need more snow before we want to groomย those trails.
  • Trails highlighted in BLUE were groomed for the first time yesterday. This is the west portion of Excelsior Road (it measures 2+ kilometers) where the accumulated snow was subject to vehicle traffic up until one week ago. Groomers ripped into that base last evening, performing multiple passes to whip it into skiable conditions. The results are probablyย rough but skiable.

To access the West Side trails, you have 4 options:

  1. Park at the warming house, and ski from 1-26-25-24-23, then use the crossover trail 23-L-K-J.
  2. Park at Letter L along the Fire Lane Road. Park well to the side, and avoid blocking the crossing where the groomers travel.
  3. Park at the east end of Excelsior Road where it meets the Fire Lane Road. A large snow berm is blocking Excelsior Road. There should be enough room for several cars to park next to the berm. Avoid blocking the path where the groomers must travel.
  4. Park at the warming house, and walk the short distance to Excelsior Road before putting on your skis.

Lovely cold January day in the Hills yesterday. Bluebird sky, fresh powder, quiet skis, winds in the treetops, woodpeckers hammering, crows talking. When you stop to appreciate your surroundings, it really isn't a silent sport, is it?

Grooming Report

  • Groomers rolled (packed) the East Side trails yesterday afternoon & evening.
  • We received several dry powder snowfalls this past weekend, groomersย packed the powder snow acrossย the width of the trails, and this included wiping out the classic track on the East Side trails.
  • The West Side trails were not groomed yesterday and still have 2-3 inches of powder snow and a well defined classic track.

Grooming Plans

  • If he can tolerate today's subzero temps, our head groomer hopes to reset classic track on the East Side Core Loop this afternoon.
  • Holding off on setting more classic track on the East Side trails until after windy conditions decrease later this week. That way we'll have a fresh track with minimalย oak leaves, pine needles, etc.
  • Based on the weather forecast, Thursday evening would be a good time to set new classic track.

Fromย Ladysmith Driftbustersย (Ladysmith): All Ladysmith Driftbusters trails will be ready for the weekend! Our base is thin but solid. Some spots poor and some really nice, overall they remain in FAIR condition. Still hanging onto early season conditions so ride appropriately!

- 98 to Conrath groomed Monday night.

- 12/27 to JS Supper Club & Catering groomed Monday night.

- 116 east to Ingram groomed this morning.

- 12 to Flambeau River Lodge groomed this morning.

Blue Hills Trails report:

Adequate base, you can use your good skis. With several dustings of snow this past week, skiing has been very good and hasn't required fresh grooming - "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." All the East Side trails are open and groomed for skating; about 75% of the East Side trails are being groomed for classic skiing. The north half of the West Side is groomed.

East Side: firm, fairly fast skating conditions with good edge control; classic conditions are very good. Anticipate some trail litter as a result of brisk winds January 18/19.

West Side: the north half was groomed January 19th with plans to set classic track.

West Side logging was completed January 18th. Until snow builds up where the West Side logging was performed, you can access the West Side at Letter L. (West Side access currently is limited due to bare ground on certain ski trails -ย READ THE IMPORTANT UPDATES INFOย section).

From Ladysmith Driftbusters (Ladysmith): as of Friday 1/14/2022 all Driftbuster trails have been groomed this week. Trails are all rated as FAIR. They are still thin. The warm weather and extra passes with the groomer brought up a few dirt spots. It's unlikely that we'll get any snow today or tomorrow but there is some in the forecast for early next week. There are spots where our trails are great, smooth and fast. However, until we get more snow, EARLY SEASON HAZARDS CONTINUE TO EXIST. Ride appropriately.

 

Cross-Country Ski Trailsย 

Blue Hills Trails report:

Adequate base, you can use your good skis. All the East Side trails are open and groomed for skating; about 80% of the East Side trails are being groomed for classic skiing. The north half of the West Side is currently open and groomed for skating.

West Side: first grooming of the season was Wednesday & Thursday - it set up like a brick. Fair skating conditions (the skate deck is still a bit rough and needs another grooming). Classic track will probably be added during the next grooming of the West Side. Until the West Side logging is done, you can access the West Side at Letter L. (West Side access currently is limited due to logging -ย READ THE IMPORTANT UPDATES INFOย section). West Side logging is supposed to be done by January 21st.

Cross-Country Ski Trailsย 

Blue Hills Trails report:

1/13/22 update: Very good to excellent skate skiing conditions on the East Side trails yesterday (Wednesday). Tuesday evening's grooming created a really nice corduroy that is now morphing toward a sugar snow consistency. Firm flat surface with great edge control. The grooming on Tuesday evening also included a fresh high quality track on the Otter Slide / Far East network of trails. Groomers spent Wednesday evening removing downed trees, limbs and branches -- and rolling (packing) the West Side trails that are not subject to logging traffic. This included the crossover trail (starting at intersection #23 on the East Side then heading west to letters L-K-J). And the trails on the northern half of the West Side. Refer to the above map that shows where loggers are still hauling logs to market. The trails rolled (groomed) last evening will hopefully firm up overnight, and offer partial access to the West Side trails.Until the West Side logging is done (soon we hope), you can access the groomed trails on the West Side by

  1. starting at the warming house, follow the Core Loop to #23, then ski the crossover trail; or
  2. park and startย at Letter L where the crossover trail crosses the Firelane Road.ย Be sure to park well off the road and leave plenty of room for logging trucks!!!

Both groomers went out early this morning. By the end of the day all our trails will be panned and ready to go when opened. There is water on 25 south a few inches deep.

From Ladysmith Driftbusters (Ladysmith) 1/6/22:

Jim and Dee groomed 116 from Ladysmith Tee Away Golf & Grill to Ingram, 99 from Tony to Adventures Resort-Bar, Grill, and Campground and 12 up to Flambeau River Lodge. Steve groomed 98 from Ladysmith Miner Station to Heart Of The North Brewing Co., Conrath and 12/27 from Ladysmith to JS Supper Club & Catering. Tomorrow Dennis and ? will do the north loop 27-99-12 past The Pickled Gill and Cedar Lodge

Trails connecting to our system:

- Winter Huskies Snowmobile Club groomed 5S๏ฟผ today from the grade to the Tuscobia.

- Bluehills Trailblazers groomed 12 back to Bruce and 27 south.

- Hawkins Sno-Hawks groomed all their trails yesterday.

- Sheldon groomer is down. Hoping to get it back out tomorrow. They haven't made it up to Tony since it snowed. Expect some drifting crossing their fields.

 

From Flambeau Area Trail Tenders (Flambeau) 1/10/22:

Due to lack of snow, Chippewa County trails will close at 8 am tomorrow morning, January 11th.

Flambeau Area Trail Tenders club trails coming off of Lake Holcombe, from the lake into Holcombe Cenex, Big Minnow, and Cookies, from the lake to Big Bear, and from the lake to Loony Bin will remain open.

THE FLAMBEAU RIDGE TRAIL OVER THE MOUNTAIN WILL CLOSE

Please do not ride on any trails that are closed

Cross-Country Ski Trailsย 

Blue Hills Trails report:

1/11/22 update: 3.5" snowfall last Wednesday. Despite cold temps and nasty windchills following that snowfall, our groomers had 98% of the East Side in good shape for the weekend. The Core Loop was in very good shape Saturday.

Packed powder conditions, adequate base, you can use your good skis. All the East Side trails are open and groomed for skating. The main trails are firm and mostly smooth, the side trails are a bit soft but very skiable. Classic track was set Friday on these East Side trails: Core Loop, Whitetail, Roundabout, and the lower half (west half) of Hemlock Canyon. That's about 15 km of classic track. The track is a bit shallow, and in certain areas the track has some scattered oak leaves and pine needles thanks to Friday night's brisk winds. Despite those negatives, the classic track is currently graded as good to very good.

Some of the West Side trails were packed (rolled) for the first time on December 30th. They're probably soft but probably skiable if you're interested in 'bushwhacking'. Until the West Side logging is done, you can access the West Side at Letter L. (West Side access currently is limited due to logging -ย READ THE IMPORTANT UPDATES INFOย section). West Side logging is supposed to be done by January 21st. Until then, we're focusing our skiing (and trail reports) on the East Side trails.

Snow and Trail Condition Updates

Snowmobile Trails

County trails are expected to open on Friday the 7th at 8am, but please check the Ride Rusk page for confirmation.

 

Please read in entirety. All Rusk County trails have a TENTATIVE OPENING for 8:00am Friday, January 7, 2022. An official announcement will be made in the coming days. I hope this early information assists locals and tourists alike in making weekend plans. Please consider choosing to ride locally and supporting our local businesses. Groomers are expected to be out in full force both day and night to prepare trails. Some trails may still not be groomed by Friday morning. Hazards may still exist until the groomer has been through a few times. Ride in anticipation of potential rough spots, brush, sticks and stones. As your comfort and skill allows, please try to avoid single tracking and pack the trail wide to assist in building a more solid base for a long season of smooth riding. Lastly, please consider joining a local club. All Rusk Co. clubs are inundated with work that needs to be done and not enough people/time to do it. If you come across signs that are covered by brush stop and clear them out. If you see a rock in the trail try to remove it. Break some branches, clear a little brush and pick up or wipe off a sign. To beat a dead horse, stay on the damn trail and take your loud exhaust off. Snowmobilers are unique to the recreation world where we cross tons of private property by the grace of generous landowners. ATVs, hunters, and hikers don't get that privilege. Without private landowner permission our 300+ miles of trails would shrink to about 50 miles of county land and ditch riding. Lastly, save the drunken shenanigans for after the sled is parked for the night. 70% of Wisconsin snowmobile fatalities involve an intoxicated operator. It takes all of us to project a positive public image in making Rusk County a premier snowmobiling destination.

Cross-Country Ski Trailsย 

Blue Hills Trails report:

1/6/22 update: 3.5" snowfall yesterday - nasty wind chills limited the amount of grooming that was performed yesterday (Wednesday). Conditions now will be soft until more grooming is done.

The new snow sits on an adequate base. With just a bit of caution you can use your good skis. All the East Side trails are open. With repetitive grooming, the trails had firmed up nicely before Wednesday's new snow.

Some of the West Side trails were packed (rolled) for the first time on December 30th. They'll be soft but probably skiable if you're interested in 'bushwhacking'. Until the West Side logging is done, you can access the West Side at Letter L. (West Side access currently limited due to logging- Read the important updates info section). West Side logging is supposed to be done by January 21st. Until then, we're focusing our skiing (and trail reports) on the East Side trails.

Ladysmith Area Trails report:

12/29/21 update: All trails at Sisters farm have been groomed and tracks set. East side for both skate and track skiing, West side tracked for skiing and Fat bike/snowshoe rolling complete. With the cold temps planned tonight the trail should set up well. Please remember the East side trails are for skiing and the West side for track skiing, fat biking and snowshoeing. When snowshoeing please do not hike on the tacked snow for skiing also please do not hike on the groomed trails without snowshoes, It potholes the trail and makes it difficult for other trail users. Get out and enjoy.

Christie Mountain

1/2/22 update: These snowmakers have just pushed more than 20 million gallons of water onto our slopes in a mere 392.5 hours. (For the record: they got the job done this season with the least amount of snowmaking hours and in the shortest time frame compared to any other snowmaking season at Christie which is no small feat!). These men have officially finished snowmaking and we should be 100% this Saturday!!

Snowmobile Trails

Some county trails are starting to open.

From Bluehills Trailblazers (Bruce) 12/30/21:

-Trail 12 from the Chippewa River and the Village of Bruce is legal to ride. This is the only segment of trail that is being opened at this time. This is not an endorsement to ride the Chippewa River. Never assume the ice is safe just because there are tracks on it. Conditions can change constantly.

 

From Bluehills Trailblazers (Bruce) 1/2/2022:

Trail OPENING north of Hwy 8.

Early season conditions. Hazards may be prevalent. Ride safely at you're own discretion.

- Trail 31 from Bruce to warming shelter and to Sawyer County Snowmobile ATV Alliance, Birchwoodbobcatriders is groomed and in fair condition.

- Trail 12 from Bruce to JS Supper Club & Catering and Ladysmith Driftbusters Snowmobile Club is NOT GROOMED.

 

From Ladysmith Driftbusters trails will OPEN 1/2/2022 at 8:00am:

Conditions are POOR to FAIR. The groomer has not been through all trails. It will be rough with possible rocks, brush, sticks, and wet areas. Please ride with extreme caution. Ruts, swamps and creek crossings are not filled. While riding, please try not to single track as we need the trail packed wide to build the base. Groomers will continue to work the trails throughout the week but we need another round of snow to improve conditions. RIDE SAFE!

- DO NOT USE THORNAPPLE RIVER CROSSING.

- Corbett Lake swamp in town is froze but ugly...more cattails than snow on the trail.

- Trail 12/27 from JS Supper Club & Catering to Ladysmith is groomed and in fair condition.

- Trail 98 from Ladysmith to Conrath has been groomed and is in fair condition. There is one plowed field that is passable. A small, shallow open creek crossing was filled with snow. Hopefully will freeze in tonight.

- Trail 116 from Ladysmith to Tony has been groomed and is in fair condition. There are 2 plowed fields that should be avoided until more snow.

- Trail 12 (high line trail) from Ladysmith toward Adventures Resort-Bar, Grill, and Campground is NOT GROOMED.

- Trail 116 from Tony to Ingram is NOT GROOMED.

- Trail 27 from Ladysmith, past The Pickled Gill and Cedar Lodge to Winter Huskies Snowmobile Club Trail 5S is NOT GROOMED.

- Trail 99 from 5S to Flambeau River Lodge is very rough with beaver dam issues including a couple washed out culverts. Extra caution required! Continuing down to Tony, all of Trail 99 is NOT GROOMED.

Cross-Country Ski Trailsย 

Blue Hills Trails report:

1/4/22 update: Just enough snow this past week to provide an adequate base, with just a bit of caution you can use your good skis. All the East Side trails are open. Classic track was set last Wednesday, it's present on the East Side Core Loop and several side trails including the Otter Slide / Far East network, the Whitetail, and the Roundabout Trails. Conditions for skating range from fair to good to very good. The skate deck has a variable quality - some trail segments are in great shape, other areas are occasionally soft or irregular, and in some areas the snow structure buckled under the weight of the grooming machines and it was hard to hide the tracks.

Our county snowmobile trails are not yet open, but they anticipate opening the trails very soon. Keep checking back for updates, or visit the Ride Rusk Facebook page for reports on trail maintenance and grooming.

Cross-Country Ski Trailsย 
Blue Hills Trails report:

12/27/21 Trail Update: 5 inches dense snow this morning, then a light mist. On groomed trails, the new snow sits on top of a solid, thin base. Grooming is anticipated this evening after temps begin dropping.

Ladysmith Area Trails report:

12/26/21 Trail Update: Groomers are busy rolling and packing the 4 inches of snow we received last night. Everything should be packed by the end of the day today but still not really enough to set track for skiing. Looks like they are saying 1-3 tomorrow. If that happens, we will regroom and hopefully have enough set track and be all set for skiing, snowshoeing and fat tire biking.

Christie Mountain

12/27/21 Update: Six inches of snow fell overnight & our groomers are pulling out to groom now. We are currently getting a little drizzle but it looks like that will subside soon. County Road O has been plowed. Get here safely!

Currently, they are working on fixing the tubing park. They're looking for it to be up and running soon.
