Snow & Trail Condition Update - March 18, 2019

March 18, 2019 1:51 pm Published by

Snowmobile Trails

Effective immediately all Rusk County Snowmobile Trails are closed.  Please respect clubs and landowners and stay off of the trails.

Want more detailed condition updates, check out a new Facebook page that is being maintained with up-to-date trail and groomer reports.  https://www.facebook.com/RideRusk/

Cross-Country Ski Trails
Even with warmer temps trails are in good condition in most spots, and some grooming is still occurring.  The forecast is calling for subfreezing overnight conditions so that will help maintain trails.

Today's Report from the Blue Hills Trails -
The base is generous. March freeze/thaw cycles have arrived. Since the grooming frequency will be decreasing now, try to time your visit to coincide with each morning's 'magic window' when rising temps and sunshine create a softening skiable trail surface.

Wide flat skate deck, very good conditions today. Nearly effortless skating Sunday morning thanks to grooming creating a fresh sugar snow corduroy that provided good edge control on the rocket fast trails. Unfortunately the base is so hard that it can't be dented to set a classic track.

WE'VE GONE TO THE DOGS! For the rest of the winter, we'll limit our grooming to the East Side trails. DOGS ARE WELCOME ON THE EAST SIDE TRAILS THE REMAINDER OF THE SNOW SEASON. Dogs are always welcome on the West Side trails.

NOTE: the West Side trails remain very skiable, they just won't receive grooming.

Today's Report from the Sisters Farm Trails -

The west side fat bike trails were groomed last night and they should set up well. With some moisture the next couple of days the riding should be excellent this weekend. With the warm temps and rain in the forecast please stay off the trails if they are soft.

Ski. Jim tolled the east side trails and they also are in pretty good shape. He will maybe do a run over on Friday after the rain to set them up for the weekend.

Snow & Trail Condition Update - March 16, 2019

March 16, 2019 10:09 am Published by

The winter to spring transition has been abrupt and brutal on the trails, warm temps and rain this past week have created some issues -- but all trails remain open, and cold overnights this weekend have stopped the deterioration.

Snowmobile Trails
Trails are open but vary greatly. Fields and roads are bad. Woods are excellent. Report from Weyerhaeuser was that everything is good over there. The attached pictures are from trail 12 between Ladysmith and Hawkins warming shack. Ladysmith to the Quarry isn't great but it's rideable with caution. Quarry to warming shack is excellent. Warming shack to Hawkins has some water/slush. Hawkins mill pond is flooding pretty good so use extreme caution if you decide to cross creek. South of Hawkins I'm sure main creek is flooded but I have not been there.

Trails in town, adjacent to roads, and crossings are most likely bare.

Use caution whenever you ride, and expect some rough spots.  No ice should ever be considered safe - especially now.
Look for updates as conditions change, and we receive -more updates.
Stay on the trails.

Spring like conditions this past week - including rain have deteriorated trails. However trails are in good condition in most spots, and some grooming is still occurring.  The forecast is calling for subfreezing overnight conditions so that will help maintain trails.

Today's Report from the Blue Hills Trails -
Despite midweek melting, the base is generous. On Friday we let the rain drain out of the snow, with plans to resume grooming some of the East Side trails Saturday morning (March 16).

Excellent conditions - grooming ongoing .  More snow this week has only improved what were already good conditions.

Today's Report from the Blue Hills Trails -

Very good skating and excellent striding. Wide trails, firm skate deck and classic track, solid pole plants.

Look at the 'Grooming' tab (above) for details regarding our favorite trails that are receiving our grooming focus at this time. We received more than 4 feet of snow in February. We are focusing our grooming on quality rather than quantity - some of the trails will not receive grooming until further notice. Currently we plan on keeping about 70% of the trails groomed. Feel free to bushwhack ungroomed trails. And now is a great time to tromp our snowshoe trails

More snow this week - 10" in some spots - and more snow is forecast for the weekend.  The base is thick at 16+" and the trails are in Excellent shape.  Groomers are out working on all trails.
The weather looks great on Saturday as well as on Sunday if you don't mind some powder.

Snowmobile Trails
With all of the snow these are the best conditions one could hope for.  Groomers have been out, but not have gotten to all of the trails to pack down the  new snow.  Trails are open throughout the entire County, excellent riding everywhere.
Use caution whenever you ride, and expect some rough spots.  No ice should ever be considered safe.

Today's Report from the Blue Hills Trails -
Another big snowfall Wednesday - 9+ inches. Fabulous snowshoeing right now.

The 11 km Core loop is groomed for skating. As of this morning, the rest of the trails still have 5-10 inches of ungroomed snow. In the interest of providing a place to ski while the Birkie trail is unavailable, we'll try to get more trails packed and groomed Friday; and hope to set classic track on the Core Loop today. We need to get quite a bit of our 20+ miles of trails packed before the next big snowfall arrives on Saturday.

Wednesday's deep snowfall was an odd mixture of snow structures, and was a challenge to groom Thursday. It took all day just to get the East Side Core Loop in good shape. And yet it was still a bit soft late Thursday afternoon.

Today's Report from the Sisters Farm Trails - Jim spent the day grooming trails. The east side ski trails should be in great shape. The west side trails are also groomed and track. The fat bike trail was groomed also tonight but may be soft with all the new snow. So if you are not skiing the birdie or riding in the Sweaty Yeti this weekend get out on your local trails and enjoy.

The weather looks awesome for some riding this weekend.

Today's Report from the Blue Hills Trails -

MECHANICAL PROBLEMS!

Lots of deep fresh snow, essentially ungroomed. As an alternative to skiing, tromp our snowshoe trails.

Late Monday afternoon (Feb. 11) our workhorse John Deere Gator suffered a major mechanical problem related to its Camoplast tracks. Repair parts are on the way from Washington State. We will try to repair the Gator on site, hopefully having it up & running by late Thursday or Friday.

Our big Arctic Cat Bearcat snowmobile wasn't up to the challenge Wednesday. Some packing was done with the snowmobile alone, but nothing is finish groomed. Our grooming will be significantly limited until both of our regular groomers can work simultaneously. Bear with us.

Today's Report from the Sisters Farm Trails -  Jim was hard at grooming trails at sister today. Ski trails rolled and are pretty good. We will do another pass with groomer tomorrow and they should be great. Bike trail will be groomed up by the weekend. Get out and play!

Look for updates as conditions change, and we receive -more updates.

Cross-Country Ski Trails
With last night's snowfall of 4-5" expect trails to be in much improved condition.  Grooming will be occurring on both trails in the next couple of days, leaving them in fair to good condition.
Today's Report from the Blue Hills Trails - 1.5"-2" snowfall overnight; snowing lightly this morning. Skating conditions: good Sunday on freshly groomed trails (check the 'Grooming' tab for details). Striding conditions: "OK" on a shallow classic track set Friday on the East Side core loop. Good edge control despite the underlying icy base; mostly smooth with adequate cover despite the overall lack of snow. Bring rock skis as well as good skis - you decide once you see the conditions.

Today's Report from the Sisters Farm Trails - We finally have enough snow to groom at Sisters Farm. Jim is rolling packing ski trails today and hope to groom them up tomorrow. We will try to get bike trails groomed tonight so they will set up well with the cold temps coming. 8" very dense snowfall Saturday morning. This sits on trails that mostly had a very good base, firm trails that were providing very good freeze/thaw crust skiing before this new snow.

Snow & Trail Condition Update - March 16, 2018

March 16, 2018 3:05 pm Published by

Snowmobile Trails
Most Rusk County Snowmobile trails have closed for the season, due to poor conditions and persistent warm weather. Those that remain open are in poor condition and riding is not recommended.
Trails east of Highway 27 are completely closed, as our trails in the City of Ladysmith and west of Ladysmith.
Trails in the Weyerhaeuser area remain open- but are in poor condition and riding is not recommended. Perhaps trails in the Blue Hills Area where they are covered and shaded will still provide enjoyable riding.

Trails still open could close at any time, please check back for updates.

With the warmer temperatures open water may start to appear on stream and swamp crossings. No ice should every be considered safe, use caution.

Look for updates as conditions change, and we receive -more updates.

Cross-Country Ski Trails -
Cross- Country Ski Trail system report fair to good conditions with enjoyable conditions still present during parts of the day.

Today's Report from the Blue Hills Trails - The base is thick, plenty of skiing left.
Crusty surface Thursday morning, easier to get an edge when the temps pushed into the mid 30s yesterday and the bright sunshine helped soften the surface. The classic track was set a week ago, it's holding up well.
Freeze/thaw cycles are here, it's maple sugaring time. Follow the flow of the sap - ski the magic window each day as the trail softens; or on some days, you might find a thrilling evening sunset ski as the temps drop and a glaze is developing. If we've got snow and it's maple syrup time the skiing can be really sweet.

Today's Report from the Sisters Farm Trails - Sisters Farm Trail update. Ski trails on the East side remain pretty good, They have some crust but still provide good sking. West side is currently groomed for biking and riding has been excellent if you ride early with the low temps.

Snow & Trail Condition Update - March 6, 2018

March 6, 2018 10:36 pm Published by

Snowmobile Trails  -
A heavy snowfall of 6" was received on Monday, which covered up the bare spots on the trails and brought them up to mostly good to fair condition. There isn't much base in some areas - in particular exposed areas and near roadways, but trails in the woods are in great condition. Anticipate "spring riding" with inconsistent trail conditions depending on where you are, but we expect trails to remain open and be very enjoyable through the upcoming weekend. Clubs will be out grooming this new snow, getting the trails into the best possible condition.

Be on the lookout for caution signs, detoured or closed trails- as that happens from time to time.  Otherwise, expect good sledding.
With the warmer temperatures open water may start to appear on stream and swamp crossings. No ice should every be considered safe, use caution.

Look for updates as conditions change, and we receive -more updates.

Cross-Country Ski Trails -
The approx. 6" (more on the West/Northwest side of County) of new snow rejuvenated the trails, and once groomed expect excellent conditions to be available.  Trails will change throughout the day with temperatures at or above freezing during the day and freezing hard overnight. A good base remains and with continuous grooming has the trails in excellent condition. Adjust your waxes as necessary.
All trails have track for classical skiing, and great groomed corduroy for freestyle (skate) skiing.

UPDATE - 6" of new snow received on 2/22-2/23 with more on the way... As trails are groomed expect great conditions on all trails for the weekend.

A few warm days this past week did cause some deterioration in the trails. However, the cold overnights kept the base in decent condition. The forecast calls for more snow over the next couple of days - so cross your fingers. Even without additional snow the trails are in very ridable condition - with much of the area still with good trail reports. Grooming continues, and the clubs are doing their best to keep them in great shape.

Snowmobile Trails  -
All Rusk County Snowmobile Trails are open and reporting fair to good conditions throughout the County.  Groomers are out on the trails nearly everyday, and a good base remains.  Be on the lookout for caution signs, detoured or closed trails- as that happens from time to time.  Otherwise, expect good sledding.

Snow & Trail Condition Update - January 31, 2018

January 31, 2018 9:02 am Published by

Fresh snow!  A few inches of new snow was received overnight, which will be a big help in rejuvenating the trails.  A couple warm days over the past weekend, and a good amount of use did impact the trails - but with new snow and continued grooming all trails remain in very good condition.

Snowmobile Trails  -
All Rusk County Snowmobile Trails are open and reporting good conditions throughout the County.  Groomers are out on the trails nearly everyday, and a good base has been established.  Be on the lookout for caution signs, detoured or closed trails- as that happens from time to time.  Otherwise, expect good sledding.

This weekend's Snowmobile event is the Ladysmith Driftbuster's Brat and Chili Feed at the Tee Away in Ladysmith. http://ruskcountywi.com/event/ladysmith-driftbusters-chili-brat-feed/

Snow & Trail Condition Update - January 23, 2018

January 23, 2018 9:59 pm Published by

The forecasted snow storm produced significant snowfall in the area - anywhere from 8-12" in the County.  This is exactly what we needed, and once groomed all snowmobile and cross-country ski trails will be open and in good condition.

Snowmobile Trails  -
Tomorrow (January 24) at 8am, ALL Rusk County Snowmobile Trails will be open (with only a couple exceptions - noted below).  The Sheldon Snowmobile Club is out grooming today, which allows the Southeast quadrant to join the rest of the County in being open.
Exceptions to trails being open - Corridor Trail 31 from the Village of Bruce to Dejung Rd. is closed (update expected soon).  There is also a bypass trail on Trail 99 about 5 miles north of Flambeau Lodge - to avoid the work of some beavers - look for caution signs and the bypass trail in this area.
This weekends Snowmobile Event is the Hawkins Sno-Hawks Brat feed on Saturday, January 27.

Snow and Trail Condition Update - January 17, 2018

January 17, 2018 9:39 pm Published by

A few more inches of snow fell earlier this week, and has made it possible to open more Snowmobile Trails in the County.  Groomers have been out and are reporting  mostly fair to very good conditions.  Cross-country ski trails are also groomed and in good to excellent shape.

Snowmobile Trails  -
Tomorrow (January 18) at 8am, more than 3/4 of the County will be open for snowmobiling.  The Southwest, Northwest, and Northeast Quadrants will all be open -with some exceptions.  This means that most trails West of Highway 27 are open, and trails East of Highway 27 and North of Highway 8 are open. See the quadrant map below for reference.  Exceptions to these quadrants opening - Corridor Trail 31 from the Village of Bruce to Dejung Rd. is closed.  There is also a bypass trail on Trail 99 about 5 miles north of Flambeau Lodge - to avoid the work of some beavers - look for caution signs and the bypass trail in this area.  Corridor Trail 25N from Hawkins to Sawyer County, and Trail 116/Corridor Trail 16 from Ingram to Hawkins and into Price County, also remain open.

This weekends Snowmobile Event by the Flambeau Area Trailtenders at Flater's Resort will be accessible by snowmobile. http://ruskcountywi.com/event/flambeau-area-trail-tenders-snowmobile-club-brat-chili-feed/

Look for updates as conditions change, and we receive more updates.  We expect an update on the Southeast Quadrant before the weekend.

Snow and Trail Condition Update - January 12, 2018

January 12, 2018 11:15 pm Published by

A healthy dumping of snow fell yesterday across the County.  It appears anywhere from 3-5" was received.  Groomers are starting to work on trails and we expect to hear conditions report over the next day.  The snow should return cross-country ski trails to good condition once grooming is complete.

Snowmobile Trails  -
We do know that tomorrow (1/13) at 8am, snowmobile trails in the Hawkins area will be open.  However this will only be Corridor Trail 25N from Hawkins to Sawyer County, and Trail 116/Corridor 16 from Ingram to Hawkins and into Price County.  At this time no other snowmobile trails have opened, and we don't expect to see any updates until next week.

Snow and Trail Condition Update - January 2, 2018

January 2, 2018 6:40 pm Published by

As we start the New Year, Snowmobile trails remain closed until additional snowfall is received.

Cross-country ski trail systems in Ladysmith and the Blue Hills are open and have received periodic grooming.  Even with the limited snowfall surprisingly good conditions can be found on the trail systems.  There are some poor spots so caution should be used.  For more detailed trail updates visit their website and Facebook pages.
