Rusk County Rivers
Chippewa River
Location: Western Rusk County
Description: Relatively wide and curving, with lots of deep holes.
Paddling: An exciting paddle is from the Hwy D bridge in Exeland down to Imalone—an 11-mile stretch with lots of fast water and great fishing. Other popular stretches include the 9 miles from Imalone down to Bruce. From Bruce to the confluence with the Flambeau River, it’s a 18-mile trip through mostly calm water. From there, paddlers can travel 10.5 miles through gentle water to the Holcombe Flowage, a stretch of the river with excellent fishing for musky.
Fishing: Famous fishery for walleye and musky, as well as northern pike and panfish. Also, smallmouth approaching 20 inches.
Birding and Nature: Wooded stretches and backwaters provide excellent wildlife viewing. Look for common loons, wood ducks, mergansers and heron.
Camping: Public camping areas are specifically designated at sites for paddlers.
